Elden Ring is a difficult game, and to complete it to the end you need to have all the advantages at your disposal. Upgrading your weapon is one of the easiest ways to make the game more manageable. Weapon upgrades can have an even more dramatic effect than improving your attributes, as weapon damage tends to increase faster than damage based on your stats alone.
Upgrading weapons in Elden Ring can be a bit of a challenge though, as you can’t just spend some Runes and be done with it. Instead, weapon upgrades require Smithing Stones – rare, valuable minerals that smiths can use to fortify your equipment. As you play the game, you will naturally acquire Smithing Stones through careful exploration, lucky enemies falling, and direct purchase. But if you’re having trouble with a difficult part of the game and need a quick boost, here’s how to find Smithing Stones and use them for weapon upgrades.
How to find Smithing Stones
Before discussing how to find Smithing Stones, it’s worth noting exactly what they do. Smithing Stones are a tool for upgrading any “normal” weapon you find in the game – a broadsword, a morning star, a longbow, a spear, etc. In general, any weapon you can get from a store or enemy drop is get a regular weapon, while any weapon you can only find once during gameplay, in a treasure chest, or by beating a boss is a ‘unique’ weapon. You’ll need Gloomy Smithing Stones for that – see the next section for more details.
Smithing Stones come in nine different grades. The first eight are easy enough to distinguish: Smithing Stone (1), Smithing Stone (2), Smithing Stone (3) and so on. To max out a weapon, however, you need a rare resource, an Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone. There are only a dozen of these items in the game, so you’ll need to use them wisely.
As mentioned above, you can find Smithing Stones almost everywhere in the Lands Between. Treasure chests contain them; enemies drop them; merchants sell them. As such, it’s impossible to discuss the location of everyone in the game. Still, Smithing Stone’s rarity tends to scale with where you are in the game. For example, early game areas contain Smithing Stones (1) and (2), while late game areas offer Smithing Stones (7) and (8). Here are a few common locations to look for:
- Forging Stone (1): Limgrave, Stormhill, Mistwood
- Forging Stone (2): Stormhill, Stormveil Castle, Weeping Peninsula
- Forging stone (3): Stormveil Castle, Ainsel River, Ruin-Studded Abyss
- Forging Stone (4): Siofra River, Raya Lucaria Academy, Gael Tunnel
- Forging Stone (5): Nokron, Altus Tunnel, Sellia Crystal Tunnels
- Forging stone (6): Leyndell Royal Capital, Volcano Manor, Deeproot Depths
- Forging stone (7): Underground Shunning-Grounds, Moghwyn Palace, Miquella’s Haligtree
- Forging Stone (8): Sacred Snowfield, Yelough Anix Tunnel, Miquella’s Haligtree
- Ancient dragon forging stone: Sacred Snowfield, Miquella’s Haligtree, Crumbling Farum Azula
How to buy Smithing Stones
You can also buy Smithing Stones if you find the right items. Every now and then you’ll come across an optional dungeon with an item called Bell Bearing. By bringing these Bell Bearings back to Roundtable Hold, you can buy all the Smithing Stones you want. (Except for Ancient Dragon Stones, which are strictly limited.) Just offer the Bell Bearing to the Twin Maiden Husks just past Gideon Ofnir’s study.
- Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing (1): Explore Raya Lucaria Crystal Tunnel and defeat the Crystalian. Allows you to buy Smithing Stone (1) and (2)
- Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing (2): Explore the sealed tunnel and open a treasure chest. Allows you to buy Smithing Stone (3) and (4)
- Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing (3): Explore the Zamor ruins and open a treasure chest. Allows you to buy Smithing Stone (5) and (6)
- Smithing-Stone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4): Explore Crumbling Farum Azula and defeat the Godskin Duo. Allows you to buy Smithing Stone (7) and (8)
Finding Gloomy Smithing Stones
While Smithing Stones upgrade regular weapons, Somber Smithing Stones upgrade special or unique weapons. Regular weapons will take you most of the way through Elden Ring. But if you want to take on some of the game’s tougher bosses or get involved in the demanding player-versus-player (PvP) scene, you’re going to need something a little more exclusive. That’s where Gloomy Smithing Stones come in.
Upgrading unique weapons is actually slightly easier than upgrading regular weapons. Normal weapons have 25 ranks, each requiring a different number of Smithing Stones. Unique weapons, on the other hand, only have 10 ranks, and you only need one Gloomy Smithing Stone per level. Gloomy Smithing Stones range from (1) to (9), with a limited number of Gloomy Ancient Dragon Stones available towards the endgame.
Like Smithing Stones, Gloomy Smithing Stones are everywhere, and you can find them by thoroughly exploring and defeating every enemy you encounter. However, if you need a particular ranking, here are a few places to look:
- Sober Forging Stone (1): Limgrave, Stormveil, Morne Tunnel
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (2): Weeping Peninsula, Liurnia of the Lakes, Raya Lucaria Tunnel
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (3): Liurnia of the Lakes, Raya Lucaria Tunnel, Raya Lucaria Academy
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (4): Nokron, Sellia Crystal Tunnels, Ruin-Studded Abyss
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (5): Altus plateau, closed tunnel, Nokron
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (6): Mount Gelmir, ancient Altus tunnel, deep-seated depths
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (7): Nokstella, Rock Lake, Consecrated Snowfield
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (8): Dedicated Snowfield, Lake of Rot, Yelough Anix Tunnel
- Gloomy Smithing Stone (9): Crumbling Farum Azula, Elphael, Sacred Snowfield
- Gloomy Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone: Elphael, Crumbling Farum Azula, Moghwyn Palace
How To Buy Gloomy Smithing Stones
Like regular Smithing Stones, Gloomy Smithing Stones are also available from the Twin Maiden Husks in Roundtable Hold. You just need to find the corresponding bell bearings:
- Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (1): Explore Sellia Crystal Tunnel and defeat the Fallingstar Beast. Allows you to buy Somber Smithing Stone (1) and (2)
- Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (2): Explore Altus Tunnel and defeat the Crystalian Duo. Allows you to buy Somber Smithing Stone (3) and (4)
- Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (3): Explore Marika’s First Church and search the ground. Allows you to buy Somber Smithing Stone (5) and (6)
- Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (4): Explore Crumbling Farum Azula and search near the balcony overlooking the storm. Allows you to buy Somber Smithing Stone (7) and (8)
- Somberstone Miner’s Bell Bearing (5): Explore Crumbling Farum Azula and search near the Beside the Great Bridge Site of Lost Grace. Allows you to purchase Gloomy Smithing Stone (9)
Upgrade weapons
Once you’ve got your hands on your Smithing Stones, you’ll need to figure out how to upgrade your weapons in Elden Ring. Fortunately, this is the easy part of the process. While you can upgrade your own gear to +3 in the Church of Elleh, this won’t get you very far in the game. Instead, work your way to Roundtable Hold and find Master Hewg, the blacksmith. He can upgrade both your regular and unique weapons. Just make sure you bring some Runes with you as it doesn’t work for free.
There is actually another blacksmith in Elden Ring, although he can functionally perform the same upgrades as Master Hewg. (Iji also sells a few useful items, though.) You’ll find Iji just past the Kingsrealm Ruins in northern Liurnia. Being a giant, Iji is hard to miss. However, if you advance Ranni the Witch’s quest far enough, Iji will eventually become unavailable.
